Prior to Hawking's formulation, it was widely held that nothing could be emitted from inside the event horizon. The caveat to Hawking provided was that this thermal radiation could not provide information relating to what was going on beyond the horizon. This gets very heady, but the idea, as I understand it, was that information couldn't "transmit" because a medium is needed, and any medium would be limited to the universal constant speed of light, C. Now, this created another paradox, as quantum physics says information cannot be "destroyed."

On Wednesday, July 21, Hawking will address the 17th International Conference on General Relativity and Gravitation in Dublin, Ireland. Not originally scheduled to deliver a paper, Hawking was able to reserve the dais with a simple note to Curt Cutler, Chairman of the conference's scientific committee. The note read, "I have solved the black hole information paradox and I want to talk about it."

New Scientist-Hawking
